Lee Vickers is likely to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after tests have revealed the jockey suffered two fractured vertebrae in a fall at Southwell on Friday.

Agent Russ James revealed the jockey is to undergo surgery later today.

“He’s being operated on today – they are inserting screws and a rod into the fractured vertebrae,” he said. “Everything else is fine but they just need to knit the vertebrae.”

Vickers was taken by helicopter to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham following his mount Dalriath’s fall in the Cartwright King Handicap Chase.
