According to police in Vandalia, north of Daytona, Terry Trent, 44, was high after snorting head shop drugs when he put up the festive streamers, before settling down on the sofa to watch TV.

He was discovered by an 11-year-old boy living in the abode, who then phoned his mum Tamara Henderson to tell her what was going on.

She explained WHIO radio station: "The candle was lit on the coffee table, the television was on and very loud.

"He had said to [my son]: 'I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. I'll get my things and go'."

She called the police and Trent was arrested without incident.
