About 21% of Irish people have suffered symptoms of depression in the past year, according to the results of a new survey.

About 21% of Irish people have suffered symptoms of depression in the past year, according to the results of a new survey.

The survey’s findings, which were issued today, also show that there is a low level of awareness about the illness, its symptoms and treatments.

The results of the survey come in light of new information that suicide is the second biggest killer of young people in Europe, after roads deaths.

Consultant Psychiatrist, Patricia Casey, says depression it is a huge problem in Irish society and needs to be addressed properly.

A Series of free public information seminars is being held across the county over the next few days ahead of World Mental Health Day, on the Sunday the 10th of October.
