Google branches into shopping searches

Google has launched a test site for shopping searches.

Froogle focuses the company's search technology on matching US stores with products.

A link to the service is available from the advanced search page on Google or Froogle.com.

Search returns include photos of the sought-after product and links to the stores that sell them.

The aim is to assist shoppers by scything out corporate sites, reviews and other non-commercial pages from returns.

The company emphasises that the site doesn't offer goods directly and it won't be accepting payments from e-tailers for rankings.

Any advertising will continue to be distinguished from genuine returns under the 'Sponsored Links' banner.
