An explosion ripped through two munitions shops in a bazaar in a tribal town in north-western Pakistan today, killing at least 12 people and injuring more than 30, officials said.

It was not clear what caused the blast.

The explosion occurred at about noon in Jandola, a town on the border of rugged South Waziristan, said Mir Abbas, a government administrator in the area.

The munitions shops, a restaurant and several other buildings were heavily damaged in the blast.

Abbas said it was not clear if the explosion was caused by a bomb, or by some sort of an accident at one of the weapons shops.
