Police in Zimbabwe have arrested the editor of the independent Daily News on suspicion of publishing false information on alleged vote-rigging in last month’s presidential election.

Geoff Nyarota was arrested because of a report in the newspaper which claimed election officials had admitted that President Robert Mugabe lost the election until 700,000 votes were

mysteriously added to his tally.

Mr Nyarota was charged with abusing journalistic privilege and publishing false information.

He was freed after questioning and is expected to be summoned to appear in court later.

Meanwhile, Dumisani Muleya, a reporter with the Zimbabwe Independent, was also arrested

today over a report which claimed that President Mugabe’s brother-in-law was leading a militia trying to seize control of a profitable white-owned food company in Harare.
