Newcastle boss Bobby Robson took a UEFA Cup gamble in Norway this afternoon by resting three of his big guns.
The game kicked off at 4pm.
Skipper Alan Shearer and key midfielders Kieron Dyer and Laurent Robert were named only among the substitutes against Valerenga.
Robson handed Shola Ameobi, Jermaine Jenas and Hugo Viana recalls in three changes to the side which started the 2-1 Barclaycard Premiership victory over derby rivals Middlesbrough on Saturday, while retaining 19-year-old Darren Ambrose.
The big three were joined by loan signing Michael Bridges and 18-year-old defender Steven Taylor on the bench as United set about the task of seeing off a side which was just four minutes away from slipping out of the Norwegian top flight in November.
Valerenga player-coach Kjetil Rekdal made three changes to the side which scraped through against Polish outfit Wisla Krakow in the last round in a penalty shoot-out as David Brocken, Runar Normann and Daniel Fredheim Holm were drafted in.
