Update 11.02pm: One of the best known buildings in Cork city - the former Our Lady's Hospital - is engulfed in flames tonight.

The fire continues to burn at the front of the building and is expected to continue for several hours.

Six units of the Cork City Fire Brigade - and over two dozen firefighters - are currently battling the blaze at the derelict Victorian building in Shanakiel.

It is unclear how the fire began, but it is believed to have started in the former St Kevin's unit of the four-storey complex.

It is thought that no residential properties nearby are in any danger.

There are no reports of any injuries at this time.

Update 9.57pm: An entire section of roof at the former Our Lady's psychiatric hospital in Cork City has now been completely destroyed by fire this evening.

A nearby section of roof in the St Kevin's part of the building has almost been destroyed, as firefighters from Cork City Fire Brigade continue to battle the blaze.

A fire has broken out in a section of the former Our Lady's psychiatric hospital in Cork City this evening.

Flames could be seen from the St Kevin's section.

Cork City Fire Brigade received a call from a member of the public at 8.13pm alerting them to the blaze.

Six units are now at the scene of the disused building in Shanakiel.

Built in 1893, the facility originally accommodated almost 500 patients, before it closed in March 2002.
