Lord Of The Rings has sunk Titanic's record for the biggest first week video and DVD sale of all time, it emerged today.
The film version of Tolkien's fantasy epic shifted 2.5 million copies during its first seven days in UK shops - which is 700,000 ahead of the disaster movie's total in 1998.
Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring set a new record for first day sales last week when it sold 1.27 million on its Tuesday release.
That was a whisker ahead of the 1.25 million achieved by Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone.
A spokesman for the Rings video release said: "The figure is all the more remarkable because August is normally one of the quietest months for video and DVD sales."
Fellowship Of The Ring was the first release of a trilogy with the second, The Twin Towers, due in cinemas later this year. A sneak preview trailer is available along with the DVD.
