The Taoiseach is expected to make a national address next month to outline the way the Government will deal with the economic downturn.

According to this morning's Irish Times, the speech could be made at the Fianna Fáil party's think-in in Galway on September 15.

The newspaper claims Brian Cowen has been criticised for not making a speech detailing his priorities when he took office in May.

Now that he has had time to settle into the position, it is understood Mr Cowen will deliver an address outlining the current situation and his prognosis.

Since becoming Taoiseach, Mr Cowen has had to deal with the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty referendum, the economic downturn and Government cost-cutting measures.

This speech will aim to explain what will be done to deal with these issues.
