A trial has heard the man accused of murdering Shane Geoghegan told Gardaí that the Limerick rugby player pleaded with him to stop, before he shot him in the head.
Barry Doyle, aged 24, with addresses in Limerick and Portland Row, Dublin, denies the murder on November 9th, 2008.
Today the jury has heard admissions he made while in Garda custody.
Shane Geoghegan was shot dead across the road from his home in Clonmore, Kilteragh in Dooradoyle.
Today, after two weeks of legal argument, the jury returned to court to hear evidence of the statements the accused Barry Doyle made to gardaí following his arrest.
Mr Barry admitted stepping out of a Renault Espace and shooting the 28-year-old rugby player as he walked across the Clonmore Estate.
He told gardaí he then chased Shane Geoghegan around the back of the house where he could hear heavy breathing.
He said Shane Geoghegan pleaded ‘please stop’ before he shot him twice in the head.
In a later interview, Barry Doyle said he accepted Shane Geoghegan was an innocent man and that shooting him had been a mistake.
