Martin calls for mediation in ferry and postal disputes

Enterprise Minister Micheál Martin has called on both sides in the An Post and Irish Ferries disputes to resolve their differences through independent mediation.

Enterprise Minister Micheál Martin has called on both sides in the An Post and Irish Ferries disputes to resolve their differences through independent mediation.

An Post workers are engaging in a one-day stoppage today in protest at what they describe as the company's failure to honour a number of union-management agreements.

Irish Ferries staff, meanwhile, have been engaged in an all-out strike since Monday in protest at the "outsourcing" of jobs on its Ireland-France route to cheaper foreign labour.

Asked about the industrial unrest today, Mr Martin said: "There's an obligation on all sides to fully maximise the expertise and experience that is available in the Labour Relations Commission and the Labour Court to resolve disputes of this complexity and importance.

"Irrespective of what particular stance any side takes, if you put aside all of the rhetoric, ultimately these disputes get resolved."
