A fire in a nine-storey apartment building in eastern Moscow killed seven people including two children who died in their apartments and two men who tried in vain to save themselves by jumping out of windows.

The Moscow fire department said that three other residents were in hospital with injuries.

It blamed the fire on “careless handling of fire” by residents of an apartment on the sixth floor, where the blaze started.

NTV television reported that a preliminary investigation had revealed that a cigarette had sparked the blaze.
