A post mortem is due to be carried out on the body of a 74-year-old grandmother who was killed after being hit by her own car in Co. Clare yesterday.

The incident happened on Francis Street in Ennis at around 1.40pm.

The woman, who has been named locally as Josie Lucas, was putting shopping into the back of her car, when the vehicle unexpectedly reversed.

Her six-year-old grandson was in the car at the time, while a second grandchild was standing close by - both children escaped uninjured.

Gardaí are treating the death as a tragic accident and a postmortem will be carried out at University Hospital Limerick later.
