A man jumped in a pond and stabbed a six-foot long alligator in the eye with a pocket-knife to force it to release his dog from its jaws.

Matthew Goff, 29, said he was walking Sugar, a tan-coloured bloodhound/Shar-Pei mix, in a Gainesville, Florida, park when the dog wandered to the edge of the pond and the alligator grabbed its head.

“I couldn’t stand by and watch it happen and I had the pocket-knife so I decided to try and save her,” Goff said. “It worked and Sugar was very lucky.”

The alligator released Sugar when Goff stabbed the reptile in the eye.

The dog then ran home, escaping with three teeth marks on and around her head. Goff had a few scratches.

A state trapper searched for the alligator and said it would be killed if it could be identified as the attacker.
