O’Flynn fit to face Nijmegen

John O’Flynn came through last night’s training with Cork City and will now definitely be fit to take his place in Cork City’s Intertoto Cup second leg clash with Dutch side NEC Nijmegen tomorrow night.

O’Flynn travelled with the Cork party yesterday under a slight cloud as it emerged that he had been struggling with a thigh injury sustained in Cork’s second leg win over Swedish side Malmo FF last Sunday evening.

O’Flynn was substituted towards the end of that win over Malmo and has been receiving treatment all week from City physio Eric Woulfe.

“John came through last night’s training session unscathed and I am confident that he will be able to play against NEC Nijmegen tomorrow night,” City boss Pat Dolan told the Evening Echo.

Cork also had good news when Kevin Doyle also came through last night’s training session without complaint. He had been nursing a knee injury.

Cork would have been loath to change the team that played so well against Malmo in both legs of the first round tie and with both O’Flynn and Doyle now passed fit the Cork team will be unchanged.

Meanwhile, the mood of the Cork manager darkened yesterday when it emerged that Joe Gamble is ineligible to play against NEC Nijmegen.

Gamble, who was officially only freed up to play for Cork yesterday was not registered for the Intertoto Cup by June 10, which was the cut off date for Irish teams participating in the competition..

Gamble is also ruled out of the return match in Cork on Sunday week and if Cork run into injury trouble or have a player red carded here, they still will not be able to play their latest signing from Reading.

“I am annoyed and disappointed with the league for not keeping us up to speed on the deadlines for this competition,” said Cork manager Pat Dolan.

“We had Joe registered well in time with the league and while we knew he could not play for us until after July 1, we were never notified that June 10 was the cut-off point for the Intertoto Cup.”

Coincidentally, Johan Neeskens signed a new player at lunchtime yesterday - a 23-year-old striker - Romano Deeneboom from Heerenveen.
