A British man has been charged with making a bomb hoax after a passenger airliner was diverted under a fighter jet escort.

James Glen, 37, of High Street, Chard, Somerset, will appear before Harlow Magistrates’ Court in Essex today following the alleged incident on board an Etihad Airways flight bound for Heathrow Airport.

The flight, from Abu Dhabi, was redirected yesterday after the pilot reported a disruptive passenger.

Two RAF Typhoon jets were scrambled to accompany the aircraft before it landed at Stansted Airport shortly before midday.
