Minardi boss wants money on table

Minardi boss Paul Stoddart has told prospective buyers to put their money where their mouth is as he is becoming increasingly fed up with timewasters.

Now in his fifth season in Formula One, Stoddart has invested a lot of time and money in the team, but they remain a back-of-the-grid outfit.

When the Australian first became involved, he embarked on a five-year plan by the end of which he envisioned Minardi being regular points scorers, only for his ambitions to flounder.

Over time, Stoddart has become disillusioned with the rule-makers and power-brokers, and has long courted potential suitors to take over the tem.

Former Ferrari star Eddie Irvine, in conjunction with the financial backing of Roustam Tariko – who made his fortune in vodka and banking – have been mentioned as buyers.

The duo were initially interested in acquiring Jordan until another Russian tycoon in Alex Shnaider and his Midland Group stepped in.

Whether Irvine is serious remains to be seen, but it is further speculation of which Stoddart is becoming weary.

“I spoke to Eddie back in Monaco on a what-if basis, but I believed at that time they were looking at Jordan,” said Stoddart.

“I want to stress that we have not had any discussions. I am aware he is shopping, but they are one of five people that I know who are shopping at the moment.

“We’re the only team for sale, I think everyone accepts that, and I have made it clear, particularly if there was any manufacturer involvement, that I would always be willing to sell.

“If ever the right one comes along, I would sell if I thought the team could go further under them than it could under me.

“There are always people sniffing around, but we have had too many false starts so I am going by numbers now. You just can’t take any of it seriously unless there is money on the table.”

There has also been talk of a link with Korean car manufacturing giants Hyundai, which Stoddart feels would help the team progress if he were to remain in the sport.

But as is consistently the case at present, it is just rumour, adding: “I would love to have talks with Hyundai, but I have had no approach from them at all.

“But that is the kind of way I would like Minardi to go. Someone like Hyundai would be a perfect partner for someone like Minardi. That really would work.”
