Taliban accuse Blair of pushing US into war

The Taliban ambassador to Pakistan has accused Tony Blair of encouraging the US to go to war.

The Taliban ambassador to Pakistan has accused Tony Blair of encouraging the US to go to war.

Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef says the Prime Minister should be pushing for negotiations instead.

He says the US is using Osama bin Laden as an excuse to attack Afghanistan.

According to the Press Trust of India, Zaeef told reporters: "Blair is encouraging the Americans to go to war. Why is Blair trying such things? He should try for negotiations."

The Prime Minister has just finished a whirlwind diplomatic tour to Russia, Pakistan and India.

Zaeef told reporters in Islamabad there had been no meetings between British and Taliban diplomats.

He said: "We have no message for him [Blair]. Had he come for negotiations we would have liked to have said something."

Asked if the Taliban would ask Pakistan to share evidence given by the US about bin Laden's guilt, he said: "There is no need. If the US doesn't want to give proof to us, we will not ask for it."
