A leading charity in Dublin has warned that demand for support, advice and hot food has increased by 40% in the last year.

Crosscare, which is the social care agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin, provides assistance for homeless people, including beds, food and counselling.

By the end of this year it will have given out 180,000 meals, an increase of 70,000 over the last two years.

Launching its annual appeal today, Crosscare said it is struggling to cope with demand for food and services this year.

Speaking at the launch Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin said the huge increase is "very worrying".
