Under intense US pressure, the head of Iraq’s constitution commission today said the group could finish the constitution by August 15 if political leaders overcame their differences.
“We can say that on August 15 we can be able to conclude the constitution,” said commission chairman Humam Hammoudi.
“But under one condition: that the leaders of the bloc meet on Friday, and on August 12 we receive the results of their discussion. If there are any points of disagreement among the leaders, it will be brought forward to the National Assembly in order for them to solve it.”
Hammoudi had said his group needed more time to finish, but came under heavy pressure from US and Iraqi leaders not to ask parliament for an extension of the deadline to finish the draft.
