The average price for a litre of petrol in Ireland has risen by 12.3 cent in the past year, according to a new survey.

A nationwide survey of almost 250 petrol and diesel outlets carried out on 29 and 30 August 2005 by Consumer Affairs inspectors has also pointed to a 15.8 cent diesel price hike.

The recent survey established that the average price for a litre of petrol was 111.1 cent, while diesel averaged at 109.3 cent, compared to 98.8 cent and 93.5 cent respectively in 2004.

The Director of Consumer Affairs, Carmel Foley, has urged motorists to be vigilant and to regularly check the prices in their local areas before filling their tanks.

“It is very important that prices are clearly displayed,” said Ms Foley. “Consumers have the right to know what it will cost them before they make a purchase. They will also be able to buy where they can get the best value.”

In the 12 months in question, the price differential between petrol and diesel narrowed substantially from 5.3 cent to 1.8 cent per litre.

The survey also showed a wide difference in prices throughout the country. In Dublin there is a margin of 16 cent per litre between the cheapest and most expensive petrol. Outside Dublin, the margin is 12 cent per litre.

In Dublin, the differential between the price of a litre of diesel is almost 17 cent. Outside Dublin the differential is more than 13 cent.
