A total of 342 G8-related arrests have been made across Scotland since Saturday, police revealed today.

Tayside Police said 165 of those were made in the 24 hour period since yesterday’s outbreak of violence in Stirling involving anarchist protesters.

Officers said 91 of those were made in South Perthshire with 70 of those appearing before Perth Sheriff Court today.

Another 40 people were appearing at Stirling Sheriff Court in connection with incidents around the city yesterday morning.

Half a dozen arrests were made in the town of Auchterarder, which witnessed scenes of chaos on its outskirts yesterday afternoon.

Hundreds of protesters on a what had been a peaceful anti-poverty march breached police lines to storm a field and make a push for the ring of steel surrounding the Gleneagles Hotel where G8 leaders are meeting.

The breakout was halted by riot officers, dog handlers and mounted police who forced demonstrators to retreat.

Only two arrests were directly linked to the G8 Alternatives march itself, police added.
