Millions of German TV viewers saw a man seriously injure himself trying to jump over a car on a live show.

Samuel Koch, 23, suffered multiple spinal injuries in the stunt using special spring-powered stilts for the Wetten Dass? (Wanna Bet?) programme.

Dusseldorf University Clinic said he was in stable condition and was being slowly brought out of a medically induced coma today.

It said it was too early to say whether Mr Koch would be paralysed.

German public broadcaster ZDF said it would continue with the programme, which has attracted audiences for 30 years without incident.

Around eight million viewers were watching Saturday’s episode at the time of the accident.
