FG: enlargement will benefit farmers

Fine Gael's Agriculture spokesman Billy Timmins says that EU enlargement facilitated by the Nice Treaty referendum will yield benefits for the Irish farming community.

Fine Gael's Agriculture spokesman Billy Timmins said that EU enlargement facilitated by the Nice Treaty referendum will yield benefits for the Irish farming community.

Mr Timmins was speaking ahead of the party's public meeting on Nice in Cootehill this evening.

He said: "In uncertain times for the Common Agricultural Policy, Irish farmers should welcome allies from candidate countries into the discussions and negotiations that lie ahead in the next few years."

Mr Timmins added: "A yes vote by the agricultural community will have a very positive impact for farmers."
