The Cabinet is expected to focus on the resignation of Justice Mary Laffoy as chair of the child abuse commission when it meets in Dublin later today.
Ms Justice Laffoy resigned from the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse last week after the Government announced plans to review the remit of her investigation.
The child abuse commission was established to allow all victims of abuse in State-owned institutions the opportunity to tell their story to a sympathetic forum.
However, the Government was planning to change the commission so it would only investigate a sample number of cases rather than the 1,700 before the inquiry.
Education Minister Noel Dempsey claimed this was necessary to save money and to speed up the inquiry.
In her letter of resignation, Ms Justice Laffoy accused the Government of continually delaying and obstructing her investigation and failing to provide the resources to ensure it could fulfil its mandate.
