Investigation due after large fire at Cork Naval Base

An investigation is due to get underway following a fire at the Haulbowline Island Naval Base in Cork last night.

It is likely to be carried out by the Defence Forces with assistance from external experts.

The blaze broke out in a disused building near the officers' mess shortly after 8.30pm.

There were no injuries and the fire was contained to the old operations building.

Flames coming through the roof could be seen across the harbour.

Nearby premises were evacuated as a precaution.

Two units of Carrigaline fire service were at the scene with the base's own fire service, who also carried out boundary-cooling as well as tackling the blaze.
