Rising Formula One star Lewis Hamilton and the European Ryder Cup team have been nominated for prestigious awards.
Hamilton has been nominated for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award after being signed to partner world champion Fernando Alonso in the McLaren-Mercedes team.
The 22-year-old won the GP2 series last year and convinced Ron Dennis to give him a seat in Formula One.
Laureus World Sports Academy member Emerson Fittipaldi said: “Lewis Hamilton’s arrival has certainly added a new dimension. There is massive interest in how well he will do.”
The European Ryder Cup team have been nominated for the Laureus World Team of the Year Award after their record-equalling victory over the United States at the K Club.
The award winners will be announced during a televised ceremony at the Palau Sant Jordi, Barcelona, on Monday, April 2.
Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has been elected to the Laureus World Sports Academy.
