The Ulster Unionist Party will begin disciplinary action against Pauline Armitage and Peter Weir today after the pair refused to support David Trimble’s attempt to be re-elected as First Minister last week.

Mr Weir has already served notice that he will be challenging the disciplinary procedures in the courts unless a new panel of members hears his case.

He said if he is questioned by the same people who removed him as parliamentary candidate for north Down earlier this year, then he will take the UUP to court.

Ultimately, it will be up to the two local constituency parties to expel the pair, but, while UUP members in north Down are expected to throw Mr Weir out, it won’t be that easy in Ms Armitage’s stronghold of east Derry.

Many UUP members in Derry agree with her refusal to support David Trimble after he accepted the word of General John de Chastelain that the IRA had made a "significant" move on decommissioning.
