The gardaí and the Vatican is being accused of failing to act to stop priests abusing young boys and girls in Co Wexford.

The Ferns Inquiry, set up to investigate clerical abuse in the Wexford diocese, has uncovered a number of previously unreported cases of abuse.

The Irish Independent reports George Bermingham SC, in his findings, has cited a number of priests involved in the abuse and the cover-up.

The Catholic Church hierarchy is accused of gross inaction while gardaí are also severely criticised, in particular in relation to their investigation of Fr Jim Grennan.

Father Grennan’s accused of abusing ten girls on the altar of a local church in Monagreer.

The report concludes gardaí lost witness statements and failed to pass the case to the DPP.

The Ferns report is due to be presented to the Health Minister this week.
