A number of towns around the country are to designate special car-free zones this weekend.
It is all part of European mobility week which aims to encourage more people to use alternative forms of transport instead of the car.
The locations taking part are Tralee, Dublin, Cork County, Dun Laoghaire, Galway, Leitrim County, Limerick and Mayo County.
Joe Hennon is Environment spokesperson for the EU Commission.
He said that the long-term plan from this initiative is to remove more cars from the streets.
"35% of people in Copenhagen cycle to work and their target is to increase that to 50%, public transport is a big part of it and there are a lot of cities where they have very comprehensive either bus, rail or tram networks or a combinations of all of those", he said
"The basic idea is to take cars off the street so you have less congestion and less air pollution"
