A bus carrying 40 passengers on a shopping trip plunged 50 feet off a cliff in north-eastern Brazil today, killing 11 people and injuring 29, authorities say.
The bus apparently had brake problems and fell straight into the ravine in a mountainous region near the city of Tiangua, some 1,430 miles north-east of Sao Paulo, police said.
A large rock overhang prevented the bus from plunging even farther down the 330-feet cliff, authorities said.
Local media said some of the victims fell off the cliff as they tried to get out of the bus.
The bus driver and three children were among the dead, police said.
The bus was taking the shoppers from the city of Teresina, in the north-eastern state of Piaui, to Fortaleza, the capital of Ceara state.
