Saturday’s 33-13 win over the Dragons made it three wins from four matches for Munster this season in the RaboDirect PRO12 but new head coach Rob Penney refuses to get carried away by the positive start.
Munster laid down a marker by running in five tries as they brushed the Dragons aside on Saturday, making their narrow defeat to Ulster in Ravenhill the only blip on an otherwise flawless start to the season.
Penney’s Munster career didn’t get off to the ideal start with his team picking up just one victory from three pre-season friendly encounters but things have come together since the season kicked off in earnest with Saturday’s win leaving Munster joint second in the table, just one point off leaders Scarlets.
The Dragons never looked like making a comeback after conceding two tries inside the opening quarter of an hour on Saturday but Penney still saw plenty of things for his team to work on.
“By no means were we perfect and they (Dragons) breached us a few times and made our lads work hard and they presented us with challenges so we certainly weren't perfect,” he said.
Simon Zebo made a real impression in his first game back this season having been forced to sit out the start of the PRO12 campaign on account of the IRFU player management programme.
The winger crossed for a try as well as setting up scores for Keatley and Ronan while man-of-the-match Keith Earls made an impressive return to the number 13 jersey.
With so many players putting their hand up for a starting spot Penney is facing some selection headaches but the former Canterbury coach expects to rotate the squad over a long season.
"Everyone is putting pressure on for a starting spot but it's really about the depth of players we have and it's critical for us to get through the season, guys can't play in every game.
"Its early days and we just have to keep our feet on the ground working on our game again this week."
