The Central Bank says the slump in the mortgage market has reached a historic low in the past month.
The bank says outstanding residential mortgage debt fell by €18m in May, the second consecutive monthly fall.
On an annual basis, outstanding residential mortgage debt was just 2.6% higher last month than in May 2008, the lowest annual increase since the bank began compiling the statistics.
Elsewhere, the bank says credit card debt has also fallen back to 2006 levels.
