The union representing the majority of secondary school teachers has given a sceptical reaction to news that the Government is planning to establish a new authority to run the state exams.

The move, which will be considered by the Government before the summer break, could reduce the role of teachers in the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate.

John Whyte of the ASTI says if the system works then there should be no need to fix it.

He says the success of the exams to date has been down to the professional way teachers run, supervise and correct them.

He argues that any replacement system must enjoy the confidence of the full community.
