The families of some of the Irish people missing in the World Trade Centre terrorist attack last week, have begun arriving in New York. They are expected to visit the ruins of the World Trade Centre and the centre co-coordinating lists of missing people.

The relatives will be accompanied by Irish diplomats in the US. Five additional staff have been assigned to the Irish Consulate in New York joining the team of 15 who have been working around the clock.

The five new staff will work primarily with relatives of the Irish victims. The Department of Foreign Affairs is reluctant to speculate about a final Irish death toll but the number is expected to reach double figures, possibly as high as 20.
