England skipper David Beckham has admitted last night’s shambolic defeat in Denmark was an embarrassment.
After a tepid first half, Beckham and his team-mates were comprehensively outplayed, conceding three times in six minutes just after the hour mark and eventually slipping to a 4-1 defeat.
It was the biggest defeat of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s reign and England’s worst loss in 25 years.
Beckham, like his manager, is making no excuses.
“There is a slight embarrassment factor,” he said.
“I don’t know what you can put it down to, whether it be the fitness of the team at this stage of the season. But there are no excuses, we should still be winning these games.”
Throughout the contest, England seemed to be struggling to get into their stride.
However, it was not until after the interval, when Eriksson introduced four substitutes, that his side really collapsed, Charlton’s Dennis Rommedahl starting the rout. Not even a late Wayne Rooney effort could provide any consolation.
