Ireland is exceeding its target for the recycling of used packaging, according to Repak's latest annual figures.

The organisation says 64% of all packaging used by Irish households and industries last year was sent for recycling, well ahead of the EU target of 50%.

Repak says the increasing recycling rate is largely being driven by the introduction of pay-by-weight and pay-by-use systems for household waste collections.

It says the amount of recyclable materials being taken to bring banks increased by 31% in 2005, while kerbside collections were up 140%.
