Gardaí in Co Westmeath are investigating a serious assault in Mullingar overnight.

Gardaí in Co Westmeath are investigating a serious assault in Mullingar overnight.

A man in his 40s sustained head injuries after he was punched in the face on Oliver Plunkett Street at about 1am.

He had been talking with two other men when he was punched, fell backwards and hit his head off the pavement.

A local teenage man was arrested in relation to the incident and he's being questioned at Mullingar Garda station - a second man has been spoken to by the Gardaí.

CCTV footage will be viewed as part of investigations.
