A man faces jail after he allegedly tried to smuggle drugs out of the US in chocolate bars.

Rogelio Mauricio Harris was caught at Los Angeles International airport when immigration chiefs discovered his luggage contained 45 bars of chocolate, which appeared to contain amphetamines but later tested positive for methamphetamine.

Security agent Claude Arnold explained: "This scheme involved considerable planning and preparation and shows the lengths smugglers will go to elude detection.

"The fact this ruse was detected should serve as a deterrent for others who might be considering trying similar tactics to conceal dangerous contraband."

Harris was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to supply. If found guilty, he could spend up to 10 years in prison.
