Young people in Galway are being urged to travel in pairs following the murder of a 17-year-old female Swiss student in the city this week.

Manuela Riedo was killed on Monday night as she walked towards the town centre.

She had just arrived in Galway for a two-week English course.

It is understood that her parents will not be travelling to the city in the coming days as they are too traumatised at the death of their only child.

Superintendent Tom Curley, who is leading the murder investigation, said that there is cause for concern and students should be cautious.
