A gang of five masked men has escaped with a small amount of cash after robbing a supermarket in Co Laois in the early hours of this morning.

The gang, who were armed with baseball bats, entered the supermarket on the Johnstown Road in Rathdowney at around 1am.

They proceeded to tie up a staff member who was trying to raise the alarm before ransacking offices and fleeing with a small sum of money.

Gardaí believe they were driving a white or cream-coloured car and are seeking help from any members of the public who may have spotted the vehicle.
