The Garda Commissioner has said it is important to keep in mind that apart from the recent slayings of two innocent men in Limerick, there has been a significant overall reduction in violence there.

Speaking today, Fachtna Murphy admitted that there were unfortunately a number of dangerous, violent criminals who are prepared to carry out the ultimate act against their rivals.

Commissioner Murphy maintains that over the past 18 months, garda strength has been increased in Limerick resulting in a decrease in the number of firearm incidents.

He insisted however that the recent renewal of violent activity, such as the fatal shootings of Shane Geoghegan and Roy Collins, cannot be allowed to continue.
