Gaelic Players' Association chief Dessie Farrell has released a statement backing axed Donegal chairman Danny Harkin.

Harkin was ousted at the recent county convention following a vote of no confidence in his chairmanship by delegates.

Harkin's comments, espousing a form of pay for play, caused ructions but the GPA's statement read: "On behalf of the players across the country the GPA would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Harkin for his enlightened contribution to this ongoing debate.

"We commend him on his fortitude and vision and encourage other administrators to follow his example."
