The man's body was recovered shortly before 7pm by the specially trained Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service.

Emergency Services were alerted at approximately 6.05pm to reports of a male entering the river at Harvey's Quay, Limerick.

An extensive search was conducted by Limerick City & County Fire and Rescue Service, which deployed its rapid response boat Fireswift.

“Approximately forty-five minutes later divers from Limerick Search & Rescue recovered the man's body,” said a source.

“He's believed to be in his 30's. Gardaí and a HSE ambulance, and the Coast Guard code sign 'Rescue 115' were also in attendance. May he rest in peace,” the source added.

The man's body was transported from the scene to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem will be carried out by a local pathologist.

Meanwhile, at approximately 8pm, Limerick City & County Fire Service, who were carrying out routine checks of their rescue boat were alerted by a passerby to a female threatening to enter the Abbey River at Baal's Bridge.

Swift Water Rescue Technicians attached to the fire service, made contact with the lady and spoke with her until Gardaí and a HSE ambulance crew arrived.

The woman, aged in her mid-40s, was taken into the care of the ambulance service.

Members of the Corbett Suicide Prevention Patrol, a volunteer group which patrols Limerick's bridges to prevent suicide drownings, also attended the incident.
