Twenty-nine people were killed in an explosion in a district next to Pakistan’s troubled Swat Valley today.

Police more than 40 people were injured in the blast.

Police official Tahir Khan said it may have been a car bombing.

The explosion is the latest in a string of attacks in the country, signalling that the Taliban are still strong.

Swat has been the focus of an intense military offensive against the Taliban. The Pakistan army said it has largely cleared the valley of the insurgents, although some are on the run.

Many of the Taliban are believed to have melted into the rural areas or gone to neighbouring districts.
