The leader of the Labour Party Eamon Gilmore has accused the President of the European Central Bank of overstepping his authority in comments about struggling EU economies.
Jean-Claude Trichet said any country that cannot abide by EU finance rules "should be excluded from political decision-making, until they can do so".
It is believed he was hinting at countries like Ireland.
Speaking in Co. Cork today Mr Gilmore said the comments are "totally unacceptable".
