Gilmore criticises ECB president over comments

The leader of the Labour Party Eamon Gilmore has accused the President of the European Central Bank of overstepping his authority in comments about struggling EU economies.

The leader of the Labour Party Eamon Gilmore has accused the President of the European Central Bank of overstepping his authority in comments about struggling EU economies.

Jean-Claude Trichet said any country that cannot abide by EU finance rules "should be excluded from political decision-making, until they can do so".

It is believed he was hinting at countries like Ireland.

Speaking in Co. Cork today Mr Gilmore said the comments are "totally unacceptable".
