Collectors poised to swoop on Cork for major antiques fair
Jewellery, silver, art, furniture and militaria will lure treasure-hunters in their droves, writes
The magnetic appeal of jewellery, silver, art, antique furniture, coins, militaria and all sorts of collectibles will bring collectors in droves to the Cork Antiques Fair at the Clayton Silver Springs Hotel tomorrow.
All the dealers who attend Hibernian Antique Fairs events from the four corners of Ireland will be present with 40 stands.
There will be high-end vintage fashion from Eily Henry, silver and jewellery from Sandra Hogan, Regency furniture from Ned Guiney of Castleland Antiques, Buttevant, Irish art from Treasures of Athlone, militaria from Gary McConnell of Co Galway, costume jewellery from Anne Hawkins of Dublin, coins and banknotes from Michael Cooley of Co Laois, and China and porcelain from Brian Hurley of Kinsale.
The fair at Silver Springs tomorrow is in lieu of the event that would normally have taken place at this time of year in Kinsale.
Hibernian Antique Fairs has effectively outgrown its venue at Actons Hotel so this year it plans to run three events in Cork City. This is its 29th year of operation so the organisers and dealers who attend are no strangers to trading in good times and bad.
The market is picking up again now and this is likely to be reflected in the breadth and quality of what is on offer. These popular fairs generally have something to suit all pockets. Fashion is changing too and mor high-end magazines now routinely run features in which vintage and antique pieces are included and displayed among the most ultra- contemporary looks.
The recognition that contemporary interiors are always enhanced by the addition of a carefully chosen object whether this is furniture, art, silver or a collectible item is very good for fairs of this sort.
