Eric Djemba-Djemba should be confirmed as Manchester United’s latest signing this afternoon but the Old Trafford outfit are still struggling to push through their major deal for Ronaldinho.
Djemba-Djemba is in Manchester today completing the medical which provides the last obstacle to his move from French club Nantes.
The 23-year-old has already agreed personal terms and an announcement is likely this afternoon, although he will not be formally unveiled as he is due to return to Cameroon to attend the funeral of international team-mate Marc-Vivien Foe.
However, hopes of making Ronaldinho Alex Ferguson’s third summer signing after the capture of David Bellion on Tuesday are hanging in the balance after Paris St Germain turned down United’s initial bid.
United chief executive Peter Kenyon met his PSG counterpart Francis Graille yesterday but has now returned to Manchester to consider his next move as efforts to land the 23-year-old World Cup winner continue to frustrate.
If Kenyon cannot push through the Ronaldinho deal, it would leave Ferguson open to accusations of weakening his championship-winning squad.
The United boss knows the arrivals of Bellion and Djemba-Djemba, for all their potential, could not fill the void left by the departure of England skipper David Beckham.
Efforts to sign Harry Kewell appear doomed, which would leave Ferguson looking at a possible big-money move for Blackburn’s Damien Duff.
