Man in probe 'may have done more circumcisions'

Detectives investigating the death of a baby boy believe a man who circumcised him just hours earlier may have carried out a number of similar operations on the same day.

Detectives investigating the death of a baby boy believe a man who circumcised him just hours earlier may have carried out a number of similar operations on the same day.

It is thought that other procedures could have taken place in the Dublin area on Sunday.

Gardaí renewed their appeal for the unidentified man to come forward to help with their inquiries into the infant’s death.

Meanwhile, a private memorial service was being held for the dead baby.

The four-week-old was admitted to hospital after the operation at a private house in Waterford City.

Before reaching Waterford Regional Hospital on Sunday night he lost a large amount of blood and died shortly afterwards.

Medical staff later contacted gardaí to inform them of the death.

The infant was understood to have Nigerian parents but was born in Ireland. His parents and their two daughters had lived in Waterford since last year.

It emerged that the boy’s parents wanted him circumcised within six weeks of birth for religious reasons.

Just two years ago medical staff told the South Eastern Health Board of their concern at the lack of a service for circumcision on religious or cultural grounds.

Dr Maurice Gueret said Ireland had become a “haven” for bogus doctors.

A post-mortem examination proved inconclusive and doctors were waiting for further test results.

Gardaí in Waterford questioned a number of people about the incident.

The man who carried out the operation was no longer believed to be in Waterford City.
